The Lyttelton Lumpers' Union Picnic is : -to take place on Monday, at Heathcote < Valley, a special train being timed to ' leave the Lyttelton Station at 8.50 a.m. The following has been received from the Australian cable station:—" A fault reported yesterday in old Darwin—Java cable, about 20 miles from Banjoewangie. ; Ship getting ready for sea. The duplicate . cable working well." - The following items will be found on our -fourth page:— Lyttelton Harbour Board, Dunedin Show, Banquet to the Native Minister, Sporting Intelligence. A letter has been received from Mr Batkin, Secretary of the Star Boating Club, Wellington, stating that a four-oared crew -will be Bent to represent that Club at the forthcoming Lyttelton regatta. The entertainment for the benefit of Miss Georgie Smithson takes place at the Theatre Royal tbis evening. The amateurs who are generously giving their services have been in active rehearsal for some time past, and an excellent rendering of " Withered Leaves " may fairly be anticipated. There is good news, at last, after long months of waiting and hoping, for shareholders in the Wealth of Nations Gold-xt-ining Company. According to a private telegram received in town to-day, the new drive has been completed to a distance of 800 feet, and a gold-bearing leader has teen struck. That, of course, is not quite the same thing as coming upon a reef, bnt it is, at any rate, a promise of better thin--. It is stated that the tender of Messrs Stocks and Wallace has been accepted for the completion of the Hurunui railway bridge. This bridge was commenced Borne' two years ago by Mr M'Kenzie, of Otago, but after about a third, of the length had been erected, the -work was suspended ou account of its being found impossible to drive the timber piles. Accordingly the contract was taken over by the Government, and has been re-let, iron cylinders being substituted for piles in the specification. La_t evening Mr T. Crook, of Christchurch, gave one of hia dissolving view entertainments at Rangiora, in aid of the liiterary Institute funds. The pictures exhibited were principally finely executed views of many of the public and other buildings of historical interest in Paris and Versailles, and some beautiful Swiss scenes, the whole forming a " Tour from London to Switzerland." At intervals slides calculated to amuse the younger* portion of the audience were introduced and met with full appreciatioru The attendance was not by any means as large as the object and merits of the entertainment deserved. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Xoyal City of- Norwich Lodge, 1.0.0. F., 3LU., Lyttelton, was held last Tuesday evening. There was a very large attendance of members, and a considerable amount -of business was transacted. At 8.30 business was suspended io admit of the members of the Juvenile branch of the Lodge, and 'their brass band, who were invited at a previous meeting to attend. P.P.G.M. Burns and Secretary Dimond introduced no les3 than 100 members of the Juvenile Lodge, followed by* their band of 25 ' •members. During the remainder of the ■ evening some selections were very well Tendered by the baud, the young performers reflecting great credit en their conductor, •Mr Terrill.
