Harris, written on the barque i Poictiers, from London to New Zealand, in ' 1850. Typhus fever had broken out among ■ ike steerage passengers, and the ship's : doctor contracted fever during attendance upon them. His life was ; despaired of for several days, and : Captain Beal, of tho Poictiers, was very ' anxious to speak any vessel he might ' meet with, in order to obtain medical •• assistance for him. The following is the ! extract from the diary : — " Friday, March j 15. Very hot indeed.- The doctor is very : £11, scarcely expected to live. Thermometer, > 96_eg. in cabin ; wind, N.E. Saturday, { 16. Rather cooler. Doctor no better, j Spoke the Liverpool ship Osprey, to see if j she had a medical man on board, which, she i had not. Passed her again to leeward about sunset.
