FRENCH COLONISATION. « The French have never been a success as Colonists, and never will be. The defect, if we may call it so, is in the national character. The Frenchman loves home to-day better than home years hence. He cannot, or will not, live without his pleasures. To him life is not worth living if he cannot crack his joke, and sip his wine, and visit his caf6. We speak of the middle class. The poorer peasantry, toiling along on his poor couple of acres, still cleaves to home. He has no faiip.y to go into the silent wilderness, as does the sturdy Saxon, and eat bad damper, and exchange the news and chatter of his evenings for the dismal solitude of a forest with nothing to be heard, no newspaper, no post, no anything but the voice of tho mopoke, tho rustling of opossums and flying squirrels in the trees, and the moan of the wind through the forest. Latterly, however, he has taken it into his head that Colonies are a good thing for outposts, for garrisons., and rendezvous for his ships of war. Aud so all his recent attempts in North Africa, Madagascar, Tonquin, &c, all are directed to securing coast Colonies, or what is the same thing, small islands with good harbourage. They will never plant a Colony inland. Our British race, however, no sooner get a footing on the coast than they are off into the interior exploring, fattening cattle, digging for gold, &c, and the inland traffic soon raises the trading towns along the seaboard to great cities. In the early days, these explorations were rashly undertaken, and hundreds have died from diseases brought on by exposure, but which might have been cured by the use of suitable remedies. Foremost amongst the painful disorders have been rheumatism, neuralgia, &c, and it is not too much to say that the lives of hundreds of pioneers might have been saved if, instead of resorting to intoxicating drinks and quack medicines, they had been able to procure, as they do now, a supply of nature's own remedy — St Jacobs Oil. — [Advt.] EMIL FRESE'S HAMBURG TEAI THE GREAT GERMAN FAMILY MEDICINE.
