HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
Friday, June 6. The House met at 2.30. NOTICES OF BILLS AND MOTIONS. A large number of petitions were presented and notices of motion given, including the following new Bills : — By Mr Shrimski, Pensions Bill; by Hon E. T. Conolly, Alienation of Land, Local Courts and Bankruptcy Act Amendment ; by Hon T. Dick, Parliamentary Elections, Representation Act Amendment, Regulation of Elections Act Amendment, Otago Harbour Empowering Act Amendment. Mr Macandrbtv, for Mr Bathgate, gave notice of motion for a Committee to enquire into the causes of the commercial and financial depression, and Mr Hursthouse of a motion to discontinue Hansard, BURNHAM SCHOOL. In reply to Mr Hutchison, the Hon T. Dick said he accepted the responsibility for the employment of the present master of Burnham Industrial School, the testimonials and other information having convinced him the man was suited for the position. He had every reason to believe the school was conducted satisfactorily, and did not at present propose to make any change. NEW BILLS. The following new Bills were introduced and read a first time : — Caversham Drainage, Abolition of Plurality of Voting (Mr Barron) ; Waikato Hai-bour Board, (Mr Hamlin) ; Licensing Act Amendment, School Committees Election (Mr Steward) ; Extension of Hours of Polling (Mr Barron) ; Town Districts Act Amendment (Mr Whitaker); Eight Hours, and Local Option Extension (Mr M. W. Green) ; Seamen's Representation (Mr Bracken). Several Sessional Committees were appointed, and the House rose at 3.5 p.m. The Hon Walter W. Johnston has resigned his seat (which he held without portfolio) in the Ministry. It is probable that a member of the Legislative Council will be appointed to succeed him.
