AN INTERESTING INFANT. FIFTY TEAES AGO. DUNEDIN, June 6. As a result of the labours of the Committee in aid, some .£lBOO has been raised for the Benevolent Institution. A workshop, some tools, and a byre were burned down at Roslyn through the son of the owner playing with matches. A case came before the Magistrate to-day in which' a young man over 'six feet in height put in a claim of infancy. It was shown that he had bought some 68 cords of wood, paid £o on account, and on being pressed for the rest, set up the above plea; as he wanted twelve days of being twenty-one. The Magistrate said it was an unsatisfactory case, but he could do nothing but decide according to the law, which did not hold the defendant responsible. William M'Lachlan, one of the first settlers of Otago, died on Monday. He arrived in Otago nearly 50 years ago from Sydney, in a whaler. His wife was the first white woman who lauded in Otago.
