POLICE RETRENCHMENT.
AUCKLAND, June 7. Fraud is suspected in connection with the insolvency of Moncrieff, at Ohinemutu. Major Green has laid an information against the Natives who assaulted him at Cambridge. It is reported here that the proprietor of one of the hotels to which licenses have been refused intends to issue a writ against the Licensing Commissioners for J23000 d images. It is said that three first-class police sergeants are to be removed from Auckland and their place filled by a Sergeant-Major. This is by way of retrenchment. It has been decided by the Pastoral Association to hold a horse parade on September 20. The City Schools Committee refused to endorse Mr Steward's, M.H.R., circular for an alteration in the Education Act. The new season's wheat in the Waikato is reported to be equal in quality with that imported from Adelaide. Arrangements are being made for a new cheese factory at Tanpiriri.
