PUBLIC TBUST OFFICE OF NEW ZEALANB. THB Publio Trustee is appointed to administer all estates, of whioh he may be made ezecutor by will. Besides this, he is empowered to take charge of all kinds of money trusts, such as those under marriage settlements ; sums to- be invested for tbe benefit of minors, or bequeathed for charitable pur* poses ; moneys, the title of whioh is in dispute, or the legal owner of whioh is unknown. 'To administer all intestate estates, of whioh letters of administration have net been granted to relatives or other persons entitled thereto ; the realisation and distribution of the residues after the payment of all just debts. The administration of the estates of lunatics and lunatic patients also devolves oa the Publio Trustee, as well as the protection of all lands lying waste, of which the owner is unknown, or has beea absent from the Colony for ten years, without having left any known agent. The whole Colony is responsible for tke due fulfilment of all trusts and for the safe custody of the property placed under the charge of this officer— and by one judge, at least, it has been expressed that it is a satisfaction to the Court to be able to appoint a public officer to discharge certain duties (whioh the Court has power to do) instead of having tbe name of some person proposed, into whose fitness for the offioe the Court would have to enquire. It must be- added, that whilst for the protection of persons placing property in the Public Trust Officethe Colony is made ultimately responsible, to preserve the publio funds as far as possible from loss no trust oan be received, nor »ny proparty parted with, w&hout the consent of a Board, of whioh the Colonial Treasurer and the- Attorney-G-eneral of tho Colony are members ; nor can any money be woued without the approval of the Auditor and ©antroller-Qeneral."
