NEW ZEALAND SCENERY. AUCKLAND, Apbii,l2. A Dautical enquiry was held yea.erdoy into the oauso of tho barque Thames striking on a sunken rook sff Tiritiri. The Oaurt said that although there might bo a wunt of caution on tho port of tho Captain, still taking into consideration that tho rock was not on the chart, and that there wero six falhoma of water cloae to tho rook, they did not think the master to blame. The Court made no order regarding oosti. Tho Bociety of Arts Exhibition was opened by His Excollenoy the Governor yesterday. In the course of his remarks Sir W. Jorvois said : " Tho Oolony presents an unoommonly fine field for landscape painting. I do not know that I have evor seen in life any views finer than in Now Zoaland, and eßpeoially in and about Auckland, for the exeroißeof genius for landscape painting. lam glad to Bee that bo much attontion haa been paid hero to drawings which depict Now Zealand scenery. A fow months ago Captain Hargreaves, of the steamer Ooromandel, was thrown, and had a leg broken, through hia horeo shying at some projecting plunks at the Now Zealand Timbor Company's promises. Captain Hargreaves took action to recover £500 damagoß. It is now announced that the action has been •settled out of Court by the payment of £150.
