SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

BBPOBT OF WORKS COMMITTEE.

An ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held at 7 p.m. yesterday ; present — His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Pavitt, Andrew, Webber, Brown, White, Forrester, Ashworth, Oomber, and Sherlock.

The following report of the Works Committee was read : — "1. We have accepted the tender of Mr E. Moore, of Kaiapoi, for the supply of dog collars for the ensuing year. 2. We have also accepted the tender of Messrs London Eros for the lease of the 345 acres of the endowment reserve, the rent to be at the rate of 9s 3d per acre per annum for the whole term of 14 years. We have also arranged that the lease shall expire at the same time as their lease of the adjoining 817 acres. 3. We have considered Mr Russell's letter respecting the kerbing of the footpaths in Colombo street south, and are unable to alter our previous deoision on the question, except that we have instructed the Foreman of Works to alter the footpaths at once in the manner decided upon when the petition on the subject was under consideration. 4. The Oashmero Stone Company have submitted samples of their broken stone for the inspection of the Council, and wo have given instructions for one of the samples to be tried on the footpaths in Colombo street." The report was received and adopted. BEPOBT OP FIBE PBBVENTION COMMITTEE. The following report was read : — " Your Committee beg to report that they have held two meeting?, at which they have considered the question of the best means to be taken for the prevention of fire within the Borough. They have also had the advice of Mr Superintendent Harris, of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, and several other gentlemen on the question, but in consequence of the Fire Insurance Companies having stated their inability to contribute to the Support Of a Fire Brigade for Bjdonham till the end of their pro9ent financial year, viz., March 81, 1883, the Committee cannot recommend that any further steps bo taken in tho matter until after that time." Tho report was received and adopted. FINANCE. Tho Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the pust fortnight were £164 3s 4d, and tho expenditure £94 2a 9d. Tho credit balance in tho bank was £650 10j 2d. Tho Committee recommended that the rate collector be inetructed to sue for all arrears of drainage and other rates. A statemont was annexed showing the amount of rates collectod and outstanding, from which it appeared that of tho Borough rates £1360 15s had been collectod, and £1250 11s was outstanding; of tho Wttimakariri rate, £113 7s 4|d had been collected, leaving £106 4s Did outstanding ; of the drainage rato (suburban area), £1108 13s 8d haa beon collected, leaving £978 11s 4d outstanding; of the drainage rate (rural area), £50 Us 3id had been collected, ti&d £58 11s 24d was still outstanding. Councillor Whito pointed out that there was a discrepancy between the a-nouut of drainage rates outstanding, as slated by the Council and the Drainage Board. Xhe latter made out some £1300 or £1 100. It wu9 explained that there was a certain amount of collected rates which hud not been paid over. Tho report was adopted. HOUB OS CLOSING. Councillor Androw moved the resolution of which he had given notice, to tho effect that the resolution of May 12, 1879, which provided that the meetings of the Council should terminate at 10 o'clock eacli evening b» rescinded. Counoillor White seconded the motion, which was negatived by 6 votes to 4. GOBDON BTBBHT. Councillor I'avitt moved— " That tho Town Clerk bo instructed to serve notices upon Thomas Wallis, jun., J. W. Carter, and Alfred Allen, to the effect that this Council doss not admit its liability to pay the claims they hare made for compensation on account of tho Council having taken lands in rural oection 239 for tho extension of Gordon streot." Councillor Forrester seconded tho motion, which was agreed to. This concluded tho bueinesi, and the inertitg terminated.
