An ordinary meeting of the Committee of the Canterbury Industrial Association was held at 7.30 p.m. yesterday j preeent — Messrs A. 0. Howlaud (Chairman), K. H. Banks, W. 8. King, ¥. Jenkins, M. Sandstein, H. J. Bobb, D. Beose, H. Curlett, H J. Kirk, B. J. Hole, J. L. Scott, L. Bergh, B. W. England, and E. Jones. COBBESPONDBNCB. The following were read : — From Mr B. J. Shanks, tendering his resignation as a member ef the Committee on acoount of his time being fully oocupied by hiß business engagements. On the motion of Mr Reese, seconded b.v Mr Kirk, it was decided— "That Wr Shanks' resignation bo aooepted with regret." From Mr J. P. Jamoson, drawing attontion to the fact that an Industrial Exhibition waß to be held in Amsterdam in May, 1883. He thought it very desirable that the Colony should bo represented thereat. The other Colonies had voted sums, amounting in ene instance to £7000, for thio purpose, and he thought that it would be well if tho Association were to make a representation to Government on the matter. After a brief conversation it was resolved, on the motion of Mr H. J. Boss — " That tho Secretary be requosted to communicate with the Government, suggesting that steps be taken to cause New Zoaland to be represented at the Amsterdam Exhibition." From Mr J. E. March, Heoretary to the Ohrißtchurch Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, stating that no recommendation had been made by the Hospital Committeo with regard to tho cooking apparatus for the institution, but that the resolution of the Association would receive consideration. The letter wbb ordered to bo rooeived. From Mr T. Doyle, lithographer, suggesting the advisability of the Association conferring with similar societies in the Colony as to the depression now existing in the lithographic business, which he attributed to the fact that Government drew their supplies of lithographio printing from establishments of their own ; and that the banks and similar institutions obtained their supplies from England instead of from within the Colony. He suggested that the Association should urge the desirability of plaoing a duty on lithographio stationery ao imported ; and alao that they ahould endeavour to obtain an expression of opinion from members of the trade on the subjeot. The letter was referred to the sub-Com-mittee on looal exhibits. From Mr W. Hooper, stating that he purposed to start a weekly newspaper in Ohristohuroh, intended to especially advocate the interests of looal industries, the formation of the West Coast railway, and the progress and advancement of tha Oolony generally. The Ohairman thought that all tho Association could do waa to give a moral support. Of courae the members could tupport the paper individually, From Mr J. S. M. Jaoobsen, urgirg on the Association tho desirability of Government granting a bonus for tho discovery of a diamond, field fri Now Zealand. He hoped the, Oommittee would not let the matter drop, as he was convinced ef the existence of these gems in the Oolony. [ A desultory disoussion ensued on the sub- , ject, at the olose of whioh it was resolved, on , the motion of Mr B, J. Rom— "That Mr Jacobsen bo requested to supply more explicit information before the Association take , aotion, and that the President, Messrs Sandstein and Beese be appointed a sub-Committee , to confer witjh Mr Jacobsen with a view of | assisting him, the sub-Committee to report next meeting." Mr W. H. Wynn- Williams, M.H.8., wrote suggesting that the statistics supplied by Mr Tinline on the subject of the East Coast and Northern Central Bailway should be published in tbe newspapers. He also desired to be eleoted a member of the Association. Mr Sandstein had much pleasuro io proposing Mr Wynn- Williams as a membur of tho Association. The Chairman teoonded the nomination, and Mr Wynn- Williams was accordingly eleoted. It was docided to reply to the letter, stating that the statistics in question were on the table of the Assooiation, and attention had been called to it in the papers. The Chairman remarked that he thought that most of the newspapers had possession of a copy of the statistics. WBST COAST BAILWAY. The Ohairman roported on the result of the recent Weßt Coast Bailway Leßgue meeting, which ho considered very satisfactory. He thought that the Association should continue to baok up the agitation on the subject, and show that tho line to the West Coast was what was required. He was afraid that though the Commission might very likely report against the Eost Coaat line, they would report in fnvour of tho Central, and not of tho West Coast line. Miscßr.i,ANEors. The Chairman would like to draw the attention of the meeting to an artiole published in a recent issue of the Lyttelton Times, entitled " Exhibition Lessons, No. 4," referring to the prospects of the iron trade in New Zealand. He wished the artiole to be reed. The artiole was read accordingly. A critique on tho recent general meeting of the Association, from the New Zealand Industrial Gazette, was also road. After some routine bst iness had been transacted, Mr E. H. Banks said ho thought that there was one subject the Association could very well deal with, and that was the way the judging in the industrial classes was done at tho Agricultural Show. He did not wish to reflect on any -./articular judge, but on the system on whioh the judging was pursuod. Tho judges had too much to do, and were compelled ts go about their work in a very cursory way. They frequently had no mOfttig pf making a practical test of the artioles decided on, Jn one or twj instanoes tho judges were not men who had v.. thorough practical knowledge of the subjects. Ho instanced tho manner in which certain classes were judged in support of his opinion. Ho thought the Association could assist the Agricultural Soeiety in improving the charaoter of the judging. At present, local industries wero often *' damned with faint praise," which was most unfair. It was agreod tliat tho subjeot should be brought u>j at tho next meeting, and the Committee adjournod to Ihursday, Nov. 30.
