This Dat. (Before J. Ollivier, Esq., 8.M., and J. 1. Brown, Esq.) Houskibbakixg. — Henry Garrett was aoeused of breaking into the shop of Edward Longman, with intent to commit a felony. Mr Joyce appeared for the acoused. He understood the police wished for a remand, and if so he had no objection. Inspector Pender said tbat waa ao; and he also applied that tbe information might be altered, so as to oharge the prisoner with committing a felony in the ehop. The information waa amended, and the acoused remanded till Monday next. Laecekt. —Patriok Byan was aeouasd of stealing wearing apparel to the valua of £1, the property of John Bains. On the application of Mr Loughnan, fer the accused, a romand was grauted till the following day. Labobny fbom teb Phbson.—James Eeafe, alias O'Hearn, waß oharged with stealing from the person of Edward Mullan a watch and chain, valuo £9 17a 6d, on August 18 lasfc. Inspector Pender called Edward Mullaß, who stated that he was a carpenter, residing at Beefton. In August last he met prisoner on the Waiau bridge; he accompanied witness to Christohurch, and thoy both stayed at the same hotel. On August 18 witness was vho worse for liquor. He had the watch and ohain produced in his veßt pocket, and waa in prisoner's company in the sittingroom, where witness fell asleep. When he awoke (witness) about 6 p.m., he missed the watoh and chain, and prisoner had left. Baw prisonor two daya after, and in answer to witness he denied all knowledge of the watch. Witness had not seen him sinoe. Cross-ex-amined : Prisoner asked witness at the Oity Hotel if he had lost his watch. Further evidence adduced showed that the prisoner had pledged the watch at Stewart's pawn shop for £1 s*. This was the caso for the proseoution. His Worship eaid that under the new Act he had to ask prisoner whether ho wished to confess to the offence, or would profer to be sont to trial. Prisoner : I plead guilty. Deteotive NeU said tho accused had been convicted of similar offonces in tho Wellington provinco. His Worship sentenced tho prisoner to six months' hard labour. Tho prosocutor appliod for oxponsos to bo allowed him, seeing he had been brought from Beefton. It appeared the prisoner had over £2 en him when arrested. The pawnbroker applied for tho monoy advanced on the watch to be returned to him. His Worship directed Inspector Pender to draw up an order for the payment of what he considered prudent.
