FIRES.
A larga fire occurred at Newtown at 3 o'clock this morning. The fire originated in the shop and dwelling-house occupied by Mr Dobson, cabinetmaker, and the flame* rapidly ■ spread to the attached premises occupied by Mr Mjeri ; two housei, one of four and the other of two room», owned by Menrs Meadow and Orosi, and another four-roomed houio occupied by Mr F. Bmith, were also destroyed. Ihe flames spread so quickly that nothiDg wbb Bayed, with the exception of Smith's furniture. Nothing ia known ao to the origin. Insurances : — Dobson and Myer's buildiDg, £200 in the South British ; Meadow and Crois, £200 on house, in the National j Smith, £100 on furnituro in the National ; and house, £100 in the Norwich Union. A three-roomed house at Kilbernie, owned by a carpenter named Leadbeater, was destroyed by fire last night. It was insured in the South British for £100. GREYMOUTH, Not. 9. The price of the Argus has bean reduced to twopence and that of the Star to a peony. HOKITIKA, Not. 8. A. B. Tennant, a clerk in the Government stamp office, was arrested yesterday on a charge of embezzling stamps and money to the vtlue of £59.
