Death of Lieut -Col. Packe.
♦ We regret to announce that yesterday, at half-past two in the afternoon, died at Sumner, where he had been staying for a considerable time, in the hope of recovering from a prolonged illness, LieutenantColonel Paoke, who was the officer in command of the Volunteer! of the Canterbury District. The deceased officer was son of Lieutenant-Colonel facke, of Twyford Hall, Norfolk, and was about 46 or 47 year* of age. He saw service when in the 23rd Welsh Fusileers, in India, and was with that regiment at the relief of Lueknow. He came out to New Zealand twenty years ago, and became a member of the firm of De Bourbel, Facke, and Wills, commission agents in Ohristchurch. He took a very active part in the early days of volunteering here, and was appointed the first oaptain of the old No. 2 Company of the 0.8.V. When Colonel Header left the district, Colonel Packe, who was then holding the rank of Major, received the charge of the district in hit place. In 1868 Lieutenant- Colonel Packe was promoted to the rank he held at his death, and from that date he has been in command of the whole of the Canterbury District. He has not been a prominent man amongßt the Colonists except in connection with the Volunteers ; but he was an ardent lover of fishing, shooting, &o. Of late years he has resided in Riocarton, but, as has already been mentioned, had been recently spending some time at Sumner, where he sought relief from the disease which ultimately caused his death —congestion of the lungs". A genii»l, kind ra»n, highly honourable, a thorough eoldier, the news of his death, though not unexpected, will be received with the regret! of a large circle of warm friends.
