The animal sports at Christ's College have gradually won for themselves an important place in the oven) sof the Christchurch athletio year. Those held thiß moruing were in no respect iuferior to the ones held in past years. Each event called forth as largo a number of entries as usual, and produced the same keen competition as over. Aa for the weather, that most important factor in such contests, the boji this year evidently stood high in favour with that capricious being known as the clerk of the weather. A brisk sou'-weat breeze coolad tho air to a nice temperature, and in the shelter of tiio grounds it waß most enjoyable. The first evrnt en tho programme was Patting tho Weight ; open to the whole tchool. A. H. Williams, 26ft 2in ... 1 A. H. Kowley, 26ft lin 2 T. H. Lowry 3 For this event there were 13 names entered, out of which number some 10 came to the scratch. Rowley, who was looked on as the probable winner, did not gvito succeed in beating his larger opponent Williams, whose " puts " were mode very neatly, but he nevertheless managed to make a very close thing of it. Indeed, till the actual measurement of each had been taken, a tie seemed quite possible. Throwing the Cricket Ball; open to the whole school. T. H. Lowry, 86y<38 Ift 1 C. H. Hamilton, 79yd« lft ... .2 G. K. Bhodos 3 Four entered, and Lowry at first wont clean ahead of the others by making better use of the wind at his back. After nome clots throwing between Rhodes and Hamilton, the latter adopted Lowry's tactics, and quiokly settled tho question ot who was to take saoond place. The third throw was not measured, but was some 6yds or 7yds short of Hamilton's. Long Jump, open to boys under 14. H.Fletcher, 14ft 2iin 1 P. Fisher, 14ft Hin 2 0. 8. Oantrell, 14ft lin 3 The jumping was exceedingly close, the three first all taking their jumps very prettily. Fletcher at fint seemed likely to win easily, but the second and third very nearly pulled up to him in jumping off after the first three rounds. Long Jump, open to the whole sohool. F. Mills, 17ft 9in ... ... 1 T. H. Lowry, 17ft 2in 2 J. Owen, 16ffc ... 3 This event shows rather a falling off from former years, and contrasts unfavourably with the form shown by the youngsters. High Jump, open to Boys under 14. P. Fisher, 4ft 2in 1 E. J. Oowlishaw, 4ft lin 2 This, like tbe long jump under 14, was very close. Cantrell reached 4ft lin with the two wieners, and then found the task too much for him. Fisher and Cowlishaw both took the bar in good style, the former being if anything, the neater. High Jump, open to the whole schoel. T. H. Lowry ") W. 8. Fisher > I F.MiIU ) The event will be decided later on. Nine names were down for this itona on the programme. After a long struggle, Mills, Lowry, ajid Fisher tied. The wind had now risen considerably, and made jumping difficult. Iho three above-mentioned and Williams showed by far tho best form. Mile, open to Boys under 14. H.Fletcher 1 . F. J. Cowlishaw 2 J. 8. Hawkes 3 Garrick, Fletcher, and Cowlishaw forced the pace in the first quarter of a mile, and thoy pat eed the post in the order named. In the second round, Harman and Hutton found thorn going too fast for them, and criod off. Cowlishaw then took Bocond placo, but Fletcher running with great judgment and well within himself, wrested it from him just onthe post in the next round. From that time he forged steadily ahead, passing Garrick soon after a 100 yds of the last quarter had beet covered. Garrick almost at once threw up tbo sponge, leaving Oowlieh&w and Fletcher the race well in hand, with Hawkes struggling along gamely in tho third place. Comiug into the straight, tho two first put on full speed ; but Cowlishaw waa unable to catch his opponent. Time— suiin 14jec. Mile, open to whole school. W. Helraore 1 A.H.Williams 2 F. J. Knmilton 3 Time — smin 14soc. Helmore took the lead from the start, and kept it all through. Williams played second fiddle, and though he pulled up close on the post, could not succeed in taking first place by some six or esvon yai'ds, G*mo race between Hamilton and liall for third. 100 Yards, under 11. A. P. Linpard ... 1 A. Muobeth 2 G. Bobison 3 Lingard ran clean away from tie rest from start to finish. 100 Yards ; open to boys under 14. H. A. B. Williams 1 OM&r }»"**« 2 Tiine-13tieo. Thia brought twenty-two out of twentyeix who had ontered, to the post. Mr Worthy got the cloud of email boys away to a good start. Williams showed up in front about half wi»y, and won by about two yards. Fisher and Cowlishaw ran neck and nock for the last few yards, and finished a dead heat. Quite a crosrd for third place. lOOynrds; opon to whole school. A. T. Wobb 1 O.H.Hamilton 2 Timo— lo 3 sth eeo. This was one of the smartest run races of tho wholo day. Hamilton got the best of the start, and kept hi» load lor SOydp, Lowry ljing second some three yards behind, and Webb closo upon him. At the distance named Wobb spurted determinedly and passed Lowry at once. Hamilton was soon uware of the d!in<»irr and answered, tho challeNge. A most oxciting iruco for first and second ensued, Wobb taking tho lead a few yards from the tope, which ho breasted h&rdly a foot in udviitieo of Jlamillon. Tho rest close at Lowry's heeln, who was a good third. ICO Yiirdu ; opon to Boys under 12." W. a Oantroll 1 M. Cuff 2 Time • I'M sic. Quarter-mile ; oven to Bojs under 15 (Mr Gould's cup). F. Harm 1 M. 0. Robison 2 A. L. Temple 3 Time — 65sec. Thirteen ontered. Bihfol rushed off at great speed, well ahead of the crowd. In SOj-da ha was collared by Temple, Bobison running strong in third place, Harris just behind him. At half distance Templo had run himself ou*. and Bobison looked liko a winner. Harris, however, gradually crept up and boat him in tho straight run-in, finishing a good Gj-ds ahoad. Temple a bad third. Qimrter-TTiile j open to whole Bohool. £'i #W r ebb -,f } dead heat ... 1 C. H. Hamilton j '11.I 1 . H. Lowry 3 Titno-sy«ec. This ftguiu, Hko the hundroil xwds, resulted in a tough slrugglo between Kntuillon and Webb. Tho former sprang off wi'h tho lead, running very prettily, Webb oloie behind him, and Lawry woll up for third. When halt' way round tho course, Hamilton appeared to give out when ho was leading by two yards ot more, aad Webb quiokly pawed

him and took a commanding lead, whioh he was steadily increasing when the winners reached the Btraight run in. Lowry came close up to Hamilton,. but could not pass him. About half way up the straight Webb faltered, and Hamilton pulled up pluciily, amid greet applause, making a dead heat of it on the tape, Lowry some eight or tea yards in the rear. This concluded the first part of the programme, and the interval for luncheon arrived. On resuming, the Half-mile Handicap, opon to whole school, Was won by A. H. Williams, starting from eoratch and boating thirty others.
