SYDNEY v. AUCKLAND.

[PBB PBESB ABBOOIiTIOIT.] AUOKLAND, Oct. 8. At tho football matob, Auokland v. Sydney, from 2000 to 3000 people were present. Bain set in heavily at 8 30 p.m., the time for commencing the match, otherwise a very large number would have attended, as the in-, tereat aud excitement were intense. Blinding showers ooourred throughout the game. The betting was 3 to 1 on the Auckland team, and the event justified publio opinion. A slight delay was occasioned by the wish of Sydney to play two spells of 46 minutes, instead of four half-hours, as has been usual here. Henderson won the toas from Baper, and decided to kick with the wind, whioh was blowing very strongly. The visitors placed their men differently this time, playing more of them forward, whioh was a great improvement, and made it a far better game to look at. Baper kioked off, and dribbling was the order of the day. The Sydney forwards playing beautifully together, seemed to be getting the best of it, our men not paoking so well as usual ; but Henderson, calling on hie followers, got thorn in hand, and by a fine rush tho ball was taken into the New South Wales quarters, where Carter got a mark, and placed to Byan, who tried at goal without success. Bayli*s, by a good run and drop, relieved bis eide for the time, but the fine forward play of the blue and white soon forced Sydney down. The ball was kicked out, and out of a loose sorimmage Whiteside got hold of the leather, and by clever dodging ran right through four of the Sydney backs and touoheddown. The try wbb entrusted to Byan, who, notwithstanding the greasy, ball and cross wind, placed an unmistakeable goal to Auckland. The ball was again kicked off, ond Whiteside again shone brilliantly, while Woods' punting eamo in several times advantageously. The game now bsoamo very fast, end our forwards in the following spell got the ball across the goal line, but the Sydney captain claimed a dead ball as it had touohed a spectator, so a try was not allowed. Warbrick was ploying very hard half-back, doing a lot of tackling, while Baper, Fligg, and Bayliss showed well for Sydney. Sydney now playing well together, drove the bail into the Auckland quarters, but Byan, by a good punt into touch, prevented them eooring. The ball wao driven through a scrimmage to Woods, who made a fine run and passed to Arneil, who passed to Sims, but Walker, the New South Wales baok, by a clever run, eavod a further score. The ball was then kiokod towards Baper, who made a fine run, knocking several of our men over, and was well collared by Bindon, but the boll was neatly passed to Bayliss, who passed to •' Jumbo." The Sydney heavy weight waa well looked after by Byan, and what looked like a try saved. Looee dribbling again waa the feature, Arneil, Clayton, Oroxton, M'Kay and Biggß particularly showing good form. By very clever play they took the ball half-way up the field, and then Whiteside, by a smart run, secured a try, but Byan failed to score. limo was now called, and after a refresher and a wait of two minutes, O'Connor kicked off for Auckland. Sydney, with the wind in their favour, began to make use of their drop-kiokin;*; powers, and the ball got unpleasantly near tbe Auckland goal. Henders-jn and Clayton at thio time shone frequently in scrimmages, bb did Bindon and Carter. Bayliss, Walker, Fligg, Flynn, Howard, and Hawkins wore all doing yeoman service for their side. Webster prevented Sydney soring by a good run, finishing with a fine drop, but Sydney would not be denied, and by a rush, got the loather intothe Auckland twenty-five. Warbrick, with a good kick, sent it well down the touch-line. A series of loose scrimmages, a good rush by O'Connor, another by Bims, the ball flew out of a Borimmogo, and Woods kicked it over the bar— a lucky goal for AucUand, but a well judged kick. Baper Kicked off, and soon aft?r Wsrbvick made a very clever run, finishing with a good drop, but Sydney, dropping well with the wind, and Flynn, Howard, and Fligg, making good runs, soon brought it into the Auckland twenty-five. Woods got the ball, and instead of punting, tried to run, but was collared, ana the ball kiokod out of a scrimmage. Flynn took a pot shot, and placed tho leather neatly over the bar. Sydney now playod up, but the blue and whito would not be denied, the forwards splendidly worked the bill down, and Bindon following up scored another try, which Byan converted into a goal. Sydney seemed to go rathor to pieefs after this, and O'Connor got another try, but By*-' 1 missed the goal. The after-play was principally an opon dribbling game, and nothing noteworthy occurred, except that the ball was kept pretty close to Byduoy'B goal. .Titne was culled, and cheers and oountor cheers were given. With reference to the general play, our vipitors played a far better forward game— partly because there wero more of thorn —but the ground wos too slippery for their backs to dodge, and the boll too wot for passing, Baper handled his men well and played a fine game, as did all the Sydney team, Bayliss, Walker, Flynn, and Hawkins particularly co. Ab for the Auckland men, they certainly never play ol better, und the -election Committee has every roason to bo gratified. The forwards bear off the pulm, but individually Whiteside deserves Bpecinl mention. Woods, Warbrick, Arneil, and Carter shone in the second spall, and Webster was all there whon Suited. The result of the game was three goals and two tries by Auckland ugainst ono goal by Sydney, viz., 18 to 4 A socitl reunion was given in tho evoning, in the Bemuera Hall, in honour of the Sydney team, by his Worship the Mayor, Mr J. Clark, and loading residents.
