Highlanders up the Canal to a point opposite the enemy's position, nnd Bhelled it. Afterwards the Highlanders, with tho marines and blue jackets, landed and attacked tho enemy, who offered a stubborn reEistance, but our troops being aupoorted by a d< structive firo of Gatlings from the guuboAtß, took the position at the point of the b.yonot, completely routing the om-my. Tho remainder of •ho Highlanders marched from Suez along tho Canal, bu'i did not reach tho scene of action until tho fighting was ovor. Tho British loss was fonr killed and fourteen wounded. The Highlanders afterwards marched to Ismailia. A telegram dated Simla, August 23, saja: " A further report from General Maopherson states that in the action at Chalouf, tho enemy, who wera about 3000 e'rong, lost 168 killed, and about 300 wounded. One of thoir guns was captured. Tho lobs on the British side was two men of tho Seaforth. Highlanders drowned, and two wounded."
