ATTEMPT TO BLOW UP THE DUBL: DETECTIVES' RESIDENCE.

LONDON, Maboh 20. More disturbances are reported from the southward portions of the Transvaal, which aro said to be spreading through Basutoland. The situation is considered to be getting critical* , The news is received of tho total destruction by fire of the Theatro Bouffo in St Petersburg. Immediately the firo was discovorcd a fearful panic seized the audience, and in their efforts to escape, a great many were injured. Further information to hand renders it a certainty that there was a Fenian plot to rob

tho Volunteer armoury at the Albert Docks, | LondoD, during the confusion and eicitement caused by burning the shod. A letter was received by the authorities on Batarday, which informed them that the shed would be fired. Precautions were accordingly taken ; a strong guard o£ police was employed in watching the Armoury, and the intended theft was prevented. Mabch 21. It is rumoured that the Bussian Government have proposed that a European Conference should be held to determine the Austrian occupation of provinces. A rule for a new trial in the libel action brought by Mr Clement Scott, the dramatic critic of the Daily Telegraph, against Mr Samson, publisher of the Referee, in which the plaintiff obtained damages, has been discharged. The insurgents in the Austrian provinces have captured an Austrian provision train. Mabch 12.

A Boyal license has been granted to the AngloAustralian Guano Company to extend over a period of three years, for the export of guano from Bird Island, one of the Sandwich Group. A similar license haß also been granted to Mr Trundell of Messrs Houlder, Bros., to permit of the export of guano from Sydney Island for three years. An attempt was made to blow up the residence of the deteotive officers in Dublin. The fronts of three houses in the vicinity were wreoked j and it was deemed advisable to take the dying deposition of a person who was seriously injured by the explosion. The mutton shipped by the Protos, which left Melbourne on Jan. 4, met with a most favourable market here. On opening the cold chamber, it was found that the quality of the meat was excellent, and the size of the carcases suitable ; but the condition was bad. Many of the carcases were out of proper shape, and were discoloured. As the freezing machines worked well throughout the voyage, it is thought that the fault reßts with the mode of shipping in Melbourne, and that the meat was exposed to the sun while being conveyed in lighters from the Australian Company's stores to the ship. A shipment of sound meat would have realised fully 7d per pound.
