The French Government has sent an official note in reply to the communication of the British Government, explaining that its refusal is due to the fact that it is thought that the proposal to prolong existing treaties is contrary to law ; at the same time a hope is expressed that it may yet be found possible to overcome the obstacles which have arisen. Market.

Consols have to-day again declined, i, and are quoted at 100£. New Zealand securities remain firm at the following quotations : — 5 per cent 10-40 loan, 105 ; 5 per cent 1889 loan, I©4£ ; i\ per cent 1879-1904 loan 101i. The breadstuffa market continues very active, and prices for New Zealand and South Australian wheat and flour have again advanced by 2s. To-day's quotations are as follows : — Adelaide wheat ex warehouse, 55s per 4961b ; Adelaide flour, 40s 6d per 2801b ; New Zealand wheat ex ship, 54s Od. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,530,000 quarters. Australian tallow has advanced Is per cwt ; best beef being at 35s 6d, and best mutton at 37s 6d. Further large withdrawals of gold are being made from the Bank of England for North America.

The New Zealand Loan and Mereantile Agency Company Limited have received the following telegram : —
