Monday, August 22, (Before J. Beewick, Esq., R.M.) Bheack or tiie I'bisons' Act.— Robert Painter was charged with committing a breach of t>iis Act by holding communication with the prifonera, and depositing a nurubor of articles for their use in the new police barracks r.t Lyttelton. Thero were three charges against the accused to which ho pleaded guilt}-. Robert Willmot, a warder in the gnol, stated that on Baturdaj' morning when ho took tho prisoners out to work at. the new police baTackn, ho found two panels secreted in an tnnpty oil drum on the v?orkn. Ho subsequently haudfd them over to the Gaoler, Mr Philips. Mr Philips deposed to peeing Iho parcels opened. They contained biscuits, tobacco, pepper, sugar, butter, meat, envelopes, &c. A letter was also found in tho parcel, written by accusod to ono of tho prisoners in the gaol, uatned Barnard. On the accused wa« found a letter written from prisoner Barnard to him. Tho Magistrate said that accused had been guilty of a very cravo offence, tho three charges would bo dealt with as one, and he would bo fined £20, or, in default, threa months' hnrd labour. At the request of Mr Phillips, the Magistrate said the warrant would bo made out for the prisoner's confinement in Duneriin gaol. A case against Roderick M'Lennan, who was implicated in tlie offences, was withdrawn by the police.
