NELSON ELECTION.

DEFEAT OF MR RIOHMOND. [By Tblegbaph.] NELSON, June 7. The election of a member for the seat vacated by Mr Adams took place to-day, with the following result : — Mr Leveatain ... 438 Mr Richmond .407 Majority for Mr Levestam 31 The election passed off quietly, and without ill-feeling. Both parties were confident of victory, and the supporters of each candidate worked their hardest. Mr Levestam obtained a majority of 25 at the Port, but lost ground at the polling place at the west end of the city. However, he had 30 votes more than hie opponent at the Provincial Hall, and thus beat Mr Riohmond by 31. The number of electors who recorded their votes (845) is more than at any previous election. [FBOM OUR SPECIAL OOBBEBPONDENT.I WELLINGTON, Junb 7. Mr Levestam's return for Nelson is regarded in Wellington with vast satisfaction, not so much on account ot it being practically a Ministerial defeat, as because it is a direct snub to the Taranaki influence in the Cabinet. On personal grounds, it is acknowledged on all sides that Mr Richmond's defeat is to be deplored. It was only his connection with Major Atkinson that was fatal to him.
