The Coldstream Guards have been despatched to Ireland, and were the recipients of great demonstration on leaving London. On the event of Mr Parnell or the Irish members who are being prosecuted for sedition attempting to attend Parliament and ignore their trial, they will be arrested in the Lobby. Intelligence has been received that the Khurds have massacred 403 pilgrims. Dec. 8. In consequence of the increasing agitation in Ireland, the Government have resolved to have recourse to more strenuous measures for preserving the peace than have hitherto been adopted. With this object, lhey are now prohibiting the holding of all meetings in connection with tho land, .league, which are considered likely to lead to disturbance. A meeting of this kind was projected to be held at Brookes Borough, near Enniskelin; the local authorities interfered, and they prohibited the meeting. . Large numbers of the disaffected then assembled in the streets of the town, and were summoned to disperse. They rof used to do so, and, as there was on the spot a strong body of police whioh had beon previously reinforced by military r the Biot Act was read. The crowd still refused to separate, and exhibited threatening demeanour. The constables and Dragoons then started amongst tho people, whom thoy speedjly and completely dispersed. A number j of arrests were made. New Yobk, Dec. 6. President Hayes has sent a message to Congress, which recommends that General Ulysses Grant be appointed Commander of the United States Army.
