The Chairman reported appointments and, expenditure sanctioned by him since the lastmeeting. The report was approved. : KAIAPOI. A suggestion from the Kaiapoi Committee ■was read, to the effect that thefinesiinflicted under the compulsory clause for non-atten-dance at the schools should be .paid to the. Oommitteo towards tho expenses incurred by; bringing the clause into operation. j Mr Montgomsry thought the lletter should i le forwarded to the Government. Tho Ohairman said that representations to tie same effect hed already been sent to the Government by the Board. ; The Rev 0. Fraser thought that the clause : should be carried ;into effect with great caution, as it would not increase the attendance of scholars, kufc would probably drive; away some of the more respectable children. FUBtJUUI. Mr Cowie, as a deputation from Purunui, waited upon the Board relativo to tho division of this school district. The Ohairman asked if tho Board's letter stating that there was no monoy avoilablo for building another school had been reooived. Mr Cowie said it had, but ho wishes! to know if anything had been douoin tho matter of securing a sohool site. The Chairman thought tho Board .could undertake to obtain a «ite. in the cen'ro of Mason's Flat, as suggested. Mr Cowie undertook, if tho Hoard would obtain a good reserve, sayvof ton acres, to fence . in, plough, and sow it without delay. The Chairman said the Board would do . their best for the district, and if possible obtain the ton acres : failing that, as large an area as they could. Mr Cowie thanked tLe Board and withdrew. SCHOIiABSniPS BXAMHTAfIiION. The following repoi t was read : — " Christ churoh, J*ne 19., 1879. "The Chairman of the Board of Education. "Sir, — We have the honour te submit our report on the examinations for scholarships, •whioh were held on the 4thandsthiinat.,for classes A, B, and 0, and on the 11th, 12th., and 13th for class D. Tho number of competitors was much below the average (except to class D), being only 61, viz., in <3i»j A ls, 11 boys and 4 girls ; in class B 22, 13 boys and 9 girls ; in class 0 14, 8 boys and 6 girls ; in class D 10, 8 boys and 2 girls. " Wo append a table of the marks assigned to each candidate in each subject. In does A John Smith and Emily Burgess stand £rst and second, with a difference of 28 mai&« between them ; an interval of 37 marks separating Emily Burgess from Charles Hall, wlvo comes third. In class B the first places are taken by Robert Spoiglit and Joseph Turner, who made 375 and 361 marks respectively. E. Cohen, who is next in place, it SO marks below Turner. In class C, Kllen Piteaithly with 369 marks, and William Hay ward with 350, are first and second, and William Marsdale is third, separated from Hayward by 46 marks. In class D, William Craddock is first, making 314 marks. F. Dunnge, did not succeed in making the maximum of half marks required as a qualification fur a scholarship. "We recommend that the two unappropriated scholarships be given to Edward Cohen in class B and Charlos Hall in class A ; the second f scholarship ia class D, for whioh no r candidate :' has qualified, .being left unftwardedV \ : ■" With ■ regard to the two scholarships tenable for one year, given in place of tho ■ two not awarded last rear, we recommend that they bo given to William Marshall and Erneßt Clark. "Ellen ■' Piteaithly and Joseph Turner hold scholarships gained last year, whioh they will now have to vacate. We recommend that a scholarship, tenable for ono year, representing the unexpired portion of ono of those held by the , candidates last mentioned, be given to Thomas Cresswell, in clais A. We Bhould have made a rfmildr recommendation in favoui of Andrew Kirk, had he not been disqualified through a failure in arithmetic. We do not think that any other candidate has done * sufficiently well to bn entitled to distinction, and, therefore, reoommond that tho remaining one year scholarship be not awaided. (The iißoard resolved that they could not sanction the addition of two rooms to the • schoolmaster's house, as they had no funds which could be devoted for the purpose. ST. AIBAN9. A .letter from the Committee asked the •Board to pay for the ventilation of the main school, £17 4s, which had been rendered . nocessary by the sparrows. The Board considered that the Committee had.inouriedthe expense on their own respon--sibility,.,and therefore could not with justice look to the Board for payment. The Board then went into Committee, and upon resuming adjourned till the next day of meeting.
