ENTERTAINMENT AT KAIAPOI.

Tho first of the proposed series of entertainments in aid of the funds of the Institute took place at the Oddfellows' Hall, Kaiapoi, on Monday last ; but, owing no doubt to the very meagre notice given, there was but a poor nUendanco, the receipts amounting only to £5 lOi. The programme, which was an attractive one, was carried out very fairly, the gem of the vocal portion being undoubtedly the song " Dreamland" by Mrs S. Crombie-Brown, which she eang with great taste, and was vociferously encored. Mrs Brown very kindly responded by flinging a pretty operatic air. Of the instrumental pieces, the pianoforte solos by Mrs Hardy, more especially " Adesto Fideles," were- decidedly tho most enjoyable. The reading by Mr Hewlings, of "Experiences Among tho Shakers," was given with that gentleman's well-known humour, and elicited roare of laughter. Mrs Hardy and Mrs Crombie-Brown played the accompaniment throughout the evening, with one or two exceptions. Tho following was tho programme ; —Pianoforte solo, Miss Wright, "The Maiden's Prayer 5" reading, Mr J L. Wilson, "Sensational Occurrences;" pianoforte solo, Mra Hardy, "Caller Herring;" song, Mr Wright, " England Yet ;" song, Miss Shearsby, "Tho Vacant Chair;" glee, Messrs S.Johnston, T. Weston, J. H. Evans and H. A'Court, " Commencement ;" song, Mrs S. C. Brown, " Dreamland ;" reading, Mr Hewlings, " Among tho Shakers •" pianoforte solo, Mrs Hardy, " Adoste Fideles j" comic song, Mr P. Bate, " Come, Bobbie, come" (encored); glee, Messrs Johnston, Evans, A'Court, and Weston, " Picnic ;" song, Mr Wright, " Mother kissed me in my dreams;" pianoforte duet, Mrs Hardy and Miss King, "Goldfinch Quadrillos;" song, Mr Johneton, " Have I not loved theo;" comic sonz, Mr P. Bate, " Don't dye your hair." Tho entertainment concluded with tho National Anthoni and a vote of thanks to tho performers.
