PARLIAMENT IN CHRISTCHURCH.

The following letter appeared in the Ly\ ell on TiiifS this morning : —

Sir, — I observe from the remarks made by some of the speakers at a public meeting held in Chri-tchui'ch in reference to the Parliament meeting there, tnat my motion in the House of R.-presentatives was said to luve been moved for political purposes, and at, the suggestion of the Government. Allow me to state that. I moved the motion because I believed that Christchurch would be more convenient than Wellington as a place of meeting to almost all the members of the Assemblr. I had no consultation with the Government on the subject, having only mentioned it to one member of tho Cabinet, and he stated that he did not think that the Canterbury members would support my motion. Had 1 been instructed by the Government to move tho resolution for the purpose of enabling them to go into Committee of Supply, I would have taken care to get the supporters of (lie Government (.o vote against me. You will, thereiorp, see that I acted entirely on my own responsibility. I believe that Christ church would be the place of meeting of Parliament were the members of the Canterbury Provincial district to heartily support such a proposal. If Christchurch be not selected Canterbury members will be to blame, I would have replied ere this, but was absent from home. — I am, &c., S. E. SHRIMSKI.
