DEATH AT THE HOSPITAL.
Yesterday, George Kcnnell, the porter at the Rangiora Kailway station, who mot with an accident while shunting a truck at Rangiora on April 2, died from tho effects of the shock on his system. Ho had been sent to tho hospital immediately on the accident taking place, and was there subjected to the opera-
tion of amputation of the foot at the ancle joint. Ho appeared to sustain his strength for two or threo days after tho operation, but from tliat time till his death, he gave signs of gradually, sinking, till afc half- past seven yesterday morning ho breathed hia last. He leaves a widow and fivo small childron to mourn their loss. He had been engaged in the Railway service since the opening of the
line to Rangiora, and was much respected by his fellow employees and those who knew him. Tho accident was not the result of carelessness on hia part, as it appears that ifc is one that might occur to anyone engaged in shunting the description of truck which he waa then working with, viz., a high-sided one, and, aa there is nothing on theße trucks to
prevent similar accidents occurring any day, the wonder is that thero aro nofc more of them. It would seem fchafc shunters are ex-
pocted to hold on to these trucka without a hand-rail or any aßsiatanco savo the foot, which reata on the break, and it was in going over the points that the foot of the deceased becamo shaken off, and he, in consequence, fell immediately under the wheel, with his foot between the break and tho wheel. The deceased was a brother of Mr Fennell of Fernside. An inquest will be held at the hospital to-day, at 3 p.m.
