Who is to Biamb ? — A strange story reaches us (Auckland Herald) as to the buoys about which there was so much said during the Taupo inquiry. It appears that on his way to Auckland in tho Rowena, Captain Johnson stopped at the Mount, and went round the buoys with Captain Sellars. So convinced was he of their boing in wrong positions, that on his return to the steamer he sat down at once and wrote to the Har-bour-master, ordering him to remove them immediately to the spots pointed out by Captain Sellars. Comment is needless.

Circumstances Alter, kc— What's in a name ? Well, there is something in a name after all. A canvasser in Dunedin for coal orders, informs us (Bruce Herald) that ho solicited an order for the black diamond from the mother of a family residing in the vicinity of tho Club in vain. Sho would neither be tempted with English, Newcastle, Kaitangata, nor Green Island. Fernhill coal was then spoken of by the enterprising canvasser in his desire to push a trade. On behalf of tho captain ifc was urged that in all probability it was to his prayers that the escape of his ship was due. Mr 'Rothery, beforo whom the inquiry was held, said the Court considered Captain Ricker totally unfit for the duties of a master ; but as there was no proof that his negligence contributed to the ship's injuries they could nofc deal with Ins certificate.

Music Hath Charms.— What the New Zealander terms " a little unpleasantness," occurred afc a performance in the Imperial Opera House, Wellington, during the second half of the programme The baritone singer who sang the " Last Man," being in great voico, quito brought down the gods, and they were not satisfied with his bowing his acknowledgments, but continued fco call loudly for a repetition ; this, a footnote to the programme stated, would nofc bo allowed. The applause gradually became moro deafening, and the gentleman at length stepped forward and eaid " This applause may be meant very kindly, but I don't take it kindly." Tho remark carried weight, and tho peoplo quieted down. Mr Parker, who had previously lost his baton, now slightly lost his temper, and, turning to the audience, said, " I think the conduct of a section of tjhe audienco shows bufc slight courtesy to the amateurs and myself, who arc entertaining you." Tho romark hardly pleased the audience, and was not calculated to add to the conductor's popularity.
