Aasox — Tsidor Schwartz was again brought up on a charge of arson, and was again remanded till Thursday noxt. owing to counsel on bolh sides being engaged in the Supreme Court.

EALBE Pretences. —Herman Rose was charged with obtaining a gold watch and chain from Sigismund Cohen by means of a valueless cheque. The Inspector asked for a remand, stating there would be half a dozen similar charges against him. Mr Thomas, who appeared for prisoner, asked that the case might be prooeeded'with as soon as possible. Remanded to April 3 next. Bail was accepted, prisoner in £100, and two sureties of £50 each.

Larcenies. — George Wright aud Jamos Allen, two youths, were brought up, on remand, charged with the larceny of a bag of wheat, valued at lOs. Mr Allerton, stationmaster afc Hornby Junction, stated that he s iw a bag of wheat lying near tho railway on Sunday evening, and reported the circumstances to Constable Wetherley on Monday. When thoy returned to the spot the bag was gone, but traces of it, whero it had been dragged along the ground were seen for some distance. Subsequently saw the boys at Ray's training stables, when they acknowledged having seen a bag. Mr Ray said some of the boys told him there was a sack of grain lying on the ground, and ho told them to bring it in, as it was no use leaving it where ifc was. Mr Ray had given him no intimation of the grain being on his yemises. Inspector Hickson here observed that there was evidently no case against tho boys, and Ray ought to be in the dock instead. Mr Thomas was about to address the Bench when His Worship said

there was no case against the lads, and tbey would be discharged. Inspector, Hickson intimated that he might possibly bring a charge against Ray. Annie Smith, a young girl twelve yea-s of age, was charged with stealing groceries valued at about 10s from the store of James If ell at Shand's Track. The accused had b"en employed as servant by prosecutor's wife for about a fortnight and within the last few days a quantity of groce r ies had been ini=se 1 from the store, and afterwards found secreted in a bag in adi c 1 The accused had admitted having taken the prov sions and plantei them. It was stated by Mr M'Knight to the Bench that the g : rl's mother with her eldest daughter was keeping a house illfamc on the river bed, about four miles from Shand's track. The mother had been a widow for several years. His Worship ordered the girl to be sent to the Industrial School for three years, to be brought up in fche teaching of the Presbyterian Church.
