[special to the stab.j Jan. 16. 1 nformation has been received of the total wreck of tlie barque Schiehallion, homeward bound from Auckland, on the Isle of Wight. The ship St. Leonards is now ready for sea with a cargo valued at £90,000. She will probably sail to-morrow. The Commission on higher education held a preliminary meeting yesterday. Mr Edgar Bastings, a son of Horace Bastings, Esq., M.HTR., and lately station master at Waihola, has just been arrested here, on a telegram from Christchurch, on a charge of having forged a cheque for £7 ss, purporting to be signed by tlie General Manager of Railways, and given to Mr Henry Allen, publican, Christchurch. MiBastings was arrested on landing from the Wakatipu.
