OAMARU.
[special.] Jan. 14. A report was current this afternoon that the Rangitata Bridge had been washed away. This statement gained currency through the non-arrival of the express train from the north at its proper time. Harris' Duntroon Hotel had a very narrow escape from destruction by fire on Sunday night. A kerosene lamp exploded and set alight several articles in one of the rooms. No great damage was sustained, however, and the fire was soon got under. The telephone connecting the Ha.yb.QUV Board offices with the breakwater is in good woi'Mug order and proving of great assistance to the oilicera.
A large public meeting was held last hight to hear fche Mayor and Council explain fche financial condition of the town, in relation to fche borrowing of an additional £10,000 for the completion of the water works. The Mayor made a very clear and exhaustive speech, and one which must bo very satisfactory to the ratepayers. He entered fully into the working of tlio present scheme from its inception to the present time, and gave very good reasons for asking fche ratepayers to consent by a plebiscitum to the Council borrowing the sum asked for.
