THE SOUTH MELBOURNE MATCH.

CANTERBURY DEFEATED IN AN INNINGS AND 93 RUNS. [Fi-oiii the Correspondent 0/ the Lyilelton Times.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 11. The match was continued at midday, and the remaining South. Melbourne men gave a lot of trouble before they were disposed of. Major added 13, and was then clean bowled by Ashby, but no efforts could get rid of English, who cai-ried bis bat for 41. Nettle, the Ballavat player, also got into double figures, and altogether tke last five wickets put on 93. runs, making the huge total of 317. The wicket again played fast and true, and as before, the bowling proved itself too weak for the batting strength, opposed to it. The Canterbury men again went to the wickets, hoping at least to make a draw of the match, and at one time, when Ashby and Baker were together, there were hopes that their batting would assert itself at last. Unfortunately Baker was run out when well set, and the next five men did hardly anything. Ashby rapidly knocked up 33, but had it not been for the determined stand made by Fowler and O. Frith the innings would have fallen short of 100. They pulled the score up from 97 to 130, and then Frith was caught off Major's bawling. Fuller added two, and the innings closing for 134 left the South Melbourne victors by an innings and 93 runs. The fielding of the local team was excellent, and their bowling first-class. The prodigious scoring against the Canterbury Eleven has deprived the matches of almost all interest, and it is expected that East Melbourne will have even uu. caemr victory. THE ASSOCIATION MATCH. A match Town v. Country was commenced afc Hagley Park on Saturday, in which the rural players have so far the best of it. They were assisted by Mr W. L. Rees, the wellknown Auckland cricketer, whose underhand lobs were signally successful. Cotterill and Horwood kno3ked him about a bit at first, but the latter was clean bowled when he had made 36. Ho let out to some purpose on occasion, as his score contained no less than four 4's and four 3's, but his play is of a very careful description. Cotterill commenced with three cuts for four apiece, and was batting excellently, when be played one hard back to Turner, who caught it beautifully just abo*e the ground. A regular panic then occurred, Rees obtaining five wickets in three overs, one Btumped and four clean bowled. The batsmen seemed all at sea with the slow twisting balls. Beard and Jones made a stand sufficient for the former to score 10, and the innings closed for 97, of which the first four wickets made 75. Rees and Wilson, who went in first for the Country gave a lot of trouble before they were separated. The former hit about in all directions, not very scientifically but successfully, and Wilson played the game he is famous for. H. Cotterill suffered severely, a.ud J. Fowler -was substituted; but

withdrawn, after three overs, for Secretan. Two 4 byes was the principal result, but at 66 Beard caught Kees off his own bowling. The Aucklander's score was principally composed of 3's. Mitchell only made 1, but Wilson and Turner brought the score to 84, at which stage the former was run out. Turner continued until he had made 20, and with the score at 100, E. Cotterill, who had' relieved Secretan, bowled him. Morice quickly lost his wicket, but Stevens and Conran were not to be separated, and increased the score to 12 i, when the stumps were drawn. Beard bowled well all through, and was difficult to score off but Cotterill had luck : — The following are the scores and bowline analysis : — " TOWN. First Innings. J.
