The gradient now here exceeds one in fifty, and there are no sharp curves. It is estimated to cost £6000 per mile. It is reported that Mr G. E. Barton is going to Auckland to practise. The Eoyal Commission on higher education meets on Feb. 15, and will visit each Provincial district. The Key J. Htvbens is Secretary. _ , __, Jan. 4. Judge Williams advises that His Excellency the Governor sees no reason to interfere with the execution of the capital sentence on the murderer Walsh, although it appears that the Executive have not yet decided on his fate. The Hon J. Macandrew, after what took place in the House, declines the responsibility of issuing railway passes to the Press without the consent of the full Cabinet. He is, however, personally favourable.
