The following items appear in the Mcl- j bourne Argus : — ] COOKTOWN, Dec. 23. The Menmuir, via Torres Straits, arrived at Cooktown yesterday. She left Hong Kong and Singapore two days in advance of contract time. The tin-mining interests in Cornwall are depressed in consequence of emigration extending. Michael Ahem, the only Fenian prisoner in England, has been released. The French Republic is daily becoming more consolidated. Italy is taking active measures to suppress brigandage. The new Electoral Reform Bill introduced, basing the franchise on education, will increase the number of voters by a million and a half. German papers criticise England's conduct in pushing on war so early in Afghanistan. Obituary. — Captain Stock, Viscountess Cholmondeley, Sir T. S. Dwyer, Lady Williams, Dr Longfield, and Major English. SINGAPORE, Dec 6. The Straits Times states that important coal mines have been found in Cebu, Philippine Islands, and splendid samples obtained from large deposits. An earthquake occurred at Hong Kong, but no damage was done. It was also felt at Canton. Sir W. Robinson has returned from Bankok. He was received with great splendour by the King of Siani. Trade is dull, sugar and coffee sales low.
