THE CITY PLATE— THE RACE.

TO THB EDITOR OF THE STAB. Sib, — This event came off yesterday on the Municipal course. There was a large assemblage of the rowdy element, G. L. Lee, Esq., was Judge, and Gaskins was Clerk of the Course. At the first attempt on the foil of the flag the nags went off all of a cluster. After going a few yards OUtin took the bit in nis teeth and rushed off at a terrific pace, Birdie Darling, Trustee, Pomatum, ana Business in a ruck half a dozen lengths away, Birdie Darling, if anything, having the advantage. Approaching Luncheon Corner, Business ran ineidc a post, collided •with another, threw his rider, and came 'to grief. Shortly after, Birdie, lending the •chase behind Oiltin, was challenged by Trustee, who came up full of going. It is alleged that a jostle here took place which threw Birdie out of his stride. At- all events Trustee now took second place. On entering the straight the old grey (Oiltin) had increased his lead to some twelve or fourteen lengths, and all hope of reaching tim was out of the question. A few yards from home Pomatum came with a rush, and passing Birdie easily secured third place. Boomer and Tremayn jons ! as I anticipated, were never in it. I hear that a protest ml! be lodged against Trustee by <he backers of Birdie for the foul. It is probable that we shall have another «pin or two shortly over this course, when it is likely that the owners of Trustee, encouraged by their success yesterday, will run a number of horses from their stable. GRAND HANDICAP FLAT RACE. COSBOLATIOS STAKES. To-day there has been a great deal of talk about probable starters for this event. I have not yet been able to get the names and pedigrees of all the nags mentioned, but the following were currently reported as about fo go into training: — Judge Mellish's dark roan Nkepy, by Buckram out of Lagaol, lately in the Lr Helton •tables. PoTATOS, bright bay cob, by Mob Oncle out of Squeeze 'cm — Insolvency PAUfEB-STOX, black horse, hy French Polisher out of Unemployed. This horse when last seen in public was shockingly out of .condition. LEBRT Jack, aged, grizzled, by Chippa out •of Blower. This animal has all the appearance of a common broken down hack. He is also reported to be a roarer. There are some other animals in Judge Mellish's and Major Hickson's stables which will probably be brought Wore the public in the course of a few days. You will know all ; about them from youra truly ; until then — adieu. If I learn anything further I'll drop you a .wink.— Yours, 4c., MILKS' BOY.
