THE WAIPA ELECTION.
MB M'MINW ALMOST CERTAIN TO BE ELECTED. [PEB PEESS AGENCY.! Alexandra, July 24. The Waipa election passed off quietly here. M'Minn polled 41, Whitaker 22 votes ; at Paterangi, M'Minn 16, Whitaker 2. The result is uncertain, as important returns are not yet received. [fbom oub own correspondent.] A special train went to Mercer with electors residing in Auckland to record votes, Mercer being the nearest polling place of the Waipa electorate. Between GO and 70 availed themselves of this conveyance. Considerable interest is felt in the result of the contest. The returns from Eaglan district are not expected in before to-morrow, the general opinion at first was that Mr Whitaker had been returned by a small majority, as at Hamilton he was 74 ahead of Mr M'Minn. 9.55 p.m. The result of tke election is now sure for Mr M'Minn, the Government supporter. He lias had unlooked for success. The returns already in give the following result : — M'Minn 252 Whitaker 220 Two other returns are likely to increase Mr M'Minn's majority.
