Fail was thus dragged into the water. When his neighour's pole Avas held out to him he seemed either incapable of catching hold of it or was momentarily stupefied by the situation he was in. Before he could be ■laid hold of he was caught in a whirl of the water and Bwej)t under a small fall, about 200 yards below Avhich he Avas picked up dead.
