A passen. gor by hor states that tho cutter was sailing at a good rato, whon on tho Btarboard bow tbo whaios woro observed making right aoross tho
outter's course. The attention of thoso on beard, howover, wo* directed to the movements of an enormoa* thrasher, whioh kept pounding one of the whale* most unmercifully. Groat interest was exoited in this contest, os it was ono of an unusual nature, and one that is rarely seen. While the attention of all on board was thus rivet ted, the cutter ran right over the back of a huge whale, whioh was crossing the oourse of the vessel ia a diagonal dirootion. Tbe fish raised his tail to strike as it went ovor him, but being in suoh a peouliar position he only throw up a large quantity of water— as one of tbe passengers remarked, a minature water spout, quite sufiloient to flood the deck of tho vessel and thoroughly drench all on board.— Auokland Herald.
