A terriflo whirlwind at Cox's oroek yesterday struok Warnock Bros.' soap and candlo faotory, 100 ft long by 80ft wide, and drove both walls out, scattering the weatherboards and roofing far and wide. Tho blooks on whioh the building stood wero knocked out of position. The boards and brioks were carried a considerable distance, some of the latter striking down Mr Jamoß Warnook and a workman in the faotory. Both were injured, and the latter was slightly hurt from potash being blown into his eyes, A hut somo distanoe off was lifted bodily, but not destroyed. The tornado noxt struok Mr Roid's farm buildings, a quarter of a mile away, lifting them into tho air and oarrying tho fragments in all directions; sheets of corrugated iron wero oarried two miles. Messrs Warnooks' loss Ib £500, and tho total damage is estimated at £1000. WELLINGTON, Nov. 4. Governor and Lady Normanby, with suito, have left ia the Hinemoa on a fishing cruise. Tbey will be absent about eight days, and will oall in at Nelson tomorrow about noon, Gebvtowk, Nov. 4. The Hon. G. Waterhouse has distributed binhonorarium amongst the local institutions of Wairaropa. Dunedin, Nov 4. THE CONVENTION. The Palmerßton and Oromwoll Councils havo declined to attend tho convention Mr Menasies, M.L.0., has also doclinod to attond, alleging that the proceedings are not advisable. Tho Port Chulmerß Sohool Committee havo declined to Bend thoir Chairman, Dr Drysdale, who stated that suoh a meeting would bo deemed seditious, and, as a Justice of tho Peace, ho would not oountonanoo the proceedings. Soveral favourable replies have boen returned. Tho Art Society's reunion was poorly attended, but thero was a largo number of excellent exhibits. It is understood that Mr Logan, Provinoial Under-Secretary, and a number of othor Provincial offioors, reooived 12 months' leave of absence prior to Abolition, and that an enquiry will bo held. A movement is on foot to establish a Free Dispensary in oonneotion with the Friondly Sooieties. Rivbbton, Nov. 4. Per favour of tho Western Star, the Mayor has replied to tho Superintendent's circular asking him to attend a Convention at Dunedin, that he (tho Mayor} does not antioipato that any ovil result will arise through tho Abolition of the Provinoes, but, in faot, hailod with muoh satisfaction the ooming into operation of that Aot, which, ho belioves, will provo a groat benefit to the out districts, to the Provinoe generally, and to the Colony as a wholo. Ho Bays tbat 90 per eont. of the ratepayers have tho samo opinion on the question of administration undor tho Provincial systom in this distriot, whioh has not beon oonduoivo to tho welfare of tho residents. Therefore he declines to attend the meeting, whioh cannot be productive of any authoritative or practical result.
