This Day.
(Before W. Donald, Esq., 8.M.) Illkqallyon Pbbmishs." John Black, John Brown,and John Jansen, arrested by Constable Moutray, were charged with being found sleeping in. a straw shed on Peacook's Wharf. They were* farther charged with having some stolen property in their possession. From the evidence of Mr Kiddy.lioensee of the Empire Hotel, it appeared that the prisoner Brown went into the hotel on Wednesday night with another man and bad a drink, after which he sat down to play a game of cards. After he had left the house witness missed the paok of cards produced, which he identified as his property. Constable Montray deposed to arresting the prisoners and finding the paok of cards produoed in Jansen's swag. Jansen and Brown said that they were mates together, and had been down to Pigeon Bay to look for work. Several other miscellaneous articles were found in their swags which did not appear to belong to them. The Bench sentenced Black to twenty-four hours' imprisonment with hard labour, and at the request of Sergeant-major O'Grady, the other two prisoners were remanded until to-morrow to enable the polico to make farther enquiries. Civil Oasbs. — Lyttelton Borough Council v. W. Carson ; claim, 12s, for rates. Same v. P. Guarnids ; claim, 18s. Same v. H. Jackson 5 claim, 16s. Same r. A. Williams, claim, 10s. Judgment for amount claimed, with costs in each case.— Gh Buist v. J. Galbraith ; claim, 18s. Case ordered to stand over for a week.
