Tho annual meeting of the Licensed Victuallers' Sooiety was held on Thursday aftornoon, August 8, at Warner's Hotel. The President oooupied tho ohair, and thore was a large attendance of members. After the usual routine business had boen gone through,' the eleotion of offioers for tho year was proooeded with, and resulted in tho re-oleotion of the President, with tho following Committee — Messrs Baylee, Boatty, Hall, Warner, Pyett; Treasurer, Mr Sohmidfc; Auditors, Messrs Boatty and Hall ; Seoretary, Mr Tribe. The meeting afterwards disoussed the question of insuranoo at considerable length. Tho members present unanimously resolved to guarantee a oertoin effloo in Melbourne £100,000 worth of insuranoe to start with. They also resolved that they would enoourage thoir friends in tho trade to insure in the samo offioe as soon as thoir present polioies expired, Ono of tho speakers remarked that ib was a monstrous faot that hotel keepers wero paying four por oent per annum, whne the destruction of proporty arising from fires in hotols in this oifcy for fifteen years had been nil. It was not to be wondered at, said the same spoaker, that offices in Now Zoaland doolored half -y eat ly dividends of seventeen per oent per annum, besides adding largoly to their reserve fund. Other speakers expressed similar opinions, and thought thero was muoh cause for tho oomplaining of hotelkeepers on this subjeot. A vote of thanks to the Chairman oonoludod the proooedings.
