CORRESP O NDENCE.

. THE MAYOR'S SALARY. TO THE EDITOE OP THE STAB. Sic, — Considerable interest is teken in the motion of which Councillor Raphael gave notice last Monday evening respecting the Mayor's salary. It has been Btated that the motion could | not be discussed by the City Council, as the resolution (No. 23) of 17th September, 1873, granting £300 for the Mayor's official expenses, only referred to the present year. This statement having been made by those who ought t j be in a poiition to speak authoritatively, and being denied by others who fancy they know all about the matter, might I ask you to give the ratepayers the opportunity of judging for themselves by publishing a copy of Lhe said resolution ? With your permission, I will append Councillor Raphael's notico of motion, in order that the whole matter may be placed clearly before the public : — " Councillor Raphael to move at next sitting of the Council — ' That the resolution No. 23 on the minutes of the Council, 17th September, 1873, with reference to the sum of £3C3 being allowed for the Mayor's official expenses be rescinded from the expiration of the present Ma} oral year.' " Your obedient servant, A RATEPAYER. [A copy of the resolution referred to in Councillor Raphael's notice of motion has bsen kindly supplied to us (on application) by the Town Clerk. It is as follows : — " That 'he official expenses of the Mayor be paid by the City Council for any sum not exceeding in the whole £300 for each year." — Ed. Star.]
