SHIP VARUNA, FROM GLASGOW.

This sister ship to the Dilbarree is chartered by the New Zealand Company, and, under the command of Captain T. Y. Eowe, she brings the second batch of immigrants selected by Mr A. Duncan. The ship arrived off the Heads on Monday night, but owing to the S.W. gale, she had, to bring, up .outside... At noon, yesterday, the Health Officers and Commissioners, accompanied by his Honor the Superintendent, Mr Holloway, and others, proceeded in the s.s. Mullogh down to the ship, which was then lying a few miles outside the harbour. By the time the steamer had arrived alongside, the ship had tripped her anchor, and with a light wind was making for the Heads. The Health Officer, on receiving the Surgeon Superintendent's report proceeded on board,, and after a short delay the vessel was . declared free. On going on board it was found that there bad been no sickness during the voyage ; there were three births, and three deaths, two of children of tender years, and a single girl from consumption. The Shipping Company have made a good selection in this vesßol, which is well ; adapted for the requirements of immigrants, her 'tween decks being lofty, and her lighting good. The single girl's compartment was very clean, and the girls, who come out under the matronship of Miss Watt, receive a good character. The married couples' compartment was fairly fitted up, but it is thought that Allen's patent, cabin apparatus would be a great improvement upon the system of fittings as now carried out. This cabin apparatus has been placed on vessels carrying immigrants to Queensland, and has acted admirably. The single men's compartment was unusually large and well ventilated, over 80 persons occupying the space. His Honor and Mr Holloway thoroughly inspected the ship, and made special inquiries as to the treatment received by the immigrants, who expressed themselves satisfied wi^h the arrangements. Of the immigrants generally, we cannot say that they are exactly suited to the requirements of .th« aalany." CEJia~greater_portion of the single girls are what may be termecnirap— women — those whose business it has been to serve behind the counter. Many of the married men and single men have been brought up to some trade, but to this there are many exceptions. A number of the immigrants will be transhipped direct to Timaru, Waimate, and Ashburton, and it was said that a much larger number of immigrants could have been sent by, this : vessel had they suited the requirements of the district. Dr Hasard is Burgeon-superintendent, and has during the voyage earned the goodwill of all on board. Mr Buntruru has acted sb purser.
