THE STRAITS SETTLEMENT.
The Acheen war is being prosecuted with vigour by the Dutch, but notwithstanding successes, they continue to meet with the most strenuous opposition. While the Dutch have Ashantees from Western Africa among their troops, it is said tbat the Acheenese are ' aided by soldiers from the discharged Ceylon I Rifles and a Malay corps, tho men of which j are co-religionists and partly countrymen of tho Acheenese. Penang, Jan. 31. The Ex-prime Minister of Acheen has published in the Penang Gazette a statement that he ia prepared to swear that the treaty between Holland and Acheen is a fabrication. Penang., Feb. 4, Afternoon. An independent correspondent asserts that j the Dutch aro uncertain whether tho fort taken, in which were 14 useless guns, is tho real Kraton or not. The real Kratori is declared to be further inland. The Acheenese ambassador had an interview with General Van Swieten, and declared that the Acheenese will never surrender to the Dutch. Cholera continues among the troops. j Governor Sir Andrew Clarke is very popular at Singapore. The Laroot pirates have been subdued and disarmed, and peace restored by Governor Clarke to that disturbed quarter.
