LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

♦ Monday, Oct. 6. The Council met at the usual hour. Present — All Councillors, his Worship the Mayor in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk stated that he had received during the week £128 2s 6d. Accounts amounting to £32 13s Id were passed for payment. The following letters were read and considered : — From Mr Downes, asking permission toj open up the road to connect the drain from the gaol to that on the opposite side of the road. From Mr J. Carder, asking the patronage of the Council at an entertainment to be given in aid of the immigrants now in hospital at Ripa Island, ex Punjaub. Granted. Respecting the growth of gorse within the town, the Mayor said he had ordered the Fore- ' man to go round the town and report. The Foreman's report on the same was handed in. The Works Committee's report on the re.moval of tho pound, and also on the monument was road. Councillor Grange recommended that the monument be photographed as it stood, and that a copy be presented to the Lyttelton Colonists' Society, and afterwards sold for what it would fetch. In reply to Councillor Allwright, the mover said he considered that it should not come out of the ratepayers' money, and that he would be half-a-crown towards the expense. Councillor Allwright considered that the memorial should not be treated in such a contemptible manner. He thought that the monument should be removed, and placed in front of the Council Chamber. Councillor Graham moved, Councillor Kenner seconded, and it wa3 carried — " That the matter be deferred for one week." The report of the Works Committee was read and considered, and certain matters therein were referred to the commiil. -.\ With respect to the growth of gorse within the town, Councillor Buist moved, and Councillor Grange seconded — " That the Council's men clear the roads of gorse, and that the inhabitants have notice that in future they will have to trim their own gorse fences." Councillor Rouse moved an amendment, which was seconded by his Worship the Mayor — "That the Council's by-laws be carried out." Councillor Buist drew attention to the want of a proper jetty for the townspeople to bring down their goods to vessels at the wharf. After some explanation on the matter the subject dropped. Councillor Rouse drew attention to a nuisance existing near to Mr Dhnond's premises in Winchester street. The matter was referred to the Inspector of Nuisances. Councillor Allwright asked for information respecting the amount paid to the members of the Fire Brigade when an alarm of fire was raised. He spoke of the small amount of fines levied, and considered that the fines should be much heavier. After some discussion the matter dropped, and the Council adjourned. j
