♦ Monday, Nov. 23. The Council held its usual weekly meeting. Present — The Mayor and all Councillors.The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The report of the foroman of works on work done, and the well in London street, near Mr Stout's, and also on the nuisaucc caused by Mr Lazarus, was read. It was resolved that the wellbe cleaned ont, and that the foreman of works be instructed to find out the amount of fall thero is from Mr Lazarus'premises to the gaol sower. The lease of Mr J. Childs was signed by the Mayor. The sub-leasd of Mr Illingworth to Mr Hawkins was read, but as no provision hud been made res2seeting the Scavengei-3'.. road, it was resolved that it be not signed uniit.a provision had been inserted in the leasg".; T ' •';":.; Councillor Grange moved tho following re-' solution : — " That the present time appearing favourable to ascertaining the value of tho several springs on the piece of land, known as the Botanical reserve,- it is resolved that requisite steps be taken to ascertain what is necessai'y, and the probable expense of utilizing the same, and that a committee be appointed to report to the Council in fourteen days." Councillor Chalmers seconded the resolution, which was carried. Councillor Granga moved, Councillor Graham seconded, and it was earned, that the committee consist of Councillors Rouse, Chalmers, and the mover. Councillor Rouse spoke on tho state of Winchester-street, caused by persons throwing rubbish on the road. The matter was referred to the foreman of works. In reply to Councillor Buist it was stated that the "inhabitants living in London-street could have the use of the Council's labourers to drain into the sower on payment of costs.
