GAS COMPANY.

An extraordinary general meeting of .sharerholders was held at the Gas Offices, Gloucester street, at half-past seven o'clock last evening ; Mr W. H. Lane in the chair. The Chairman read the advertisement calling tho meeting, and explained that tho directors of the company had unanimously agreed to recommend an increase of capital to meet the, requirements of the flourishing city of Christchurch. Their present capital, was . a very small ono (only £20,000), and il* was thought advisable to increase it in ordeiv to meet the increasing wants of the city in this supply of gas. He believed that fche extension of the company's mains would prove remunerative, besides a great convenience to the inhabitants of the city. With regard to the remai'k from Mr Wilson con- , cerning the new process of lighting cities, if it were seen advisable to introduce that process here, they would still require their pipes. Messrs Cowlishaw and E. G. Wright spoke in favour of the resolution. The Chairman then put the resolution, and declared it to bo carried unanimously.
