FRIGHTFUL SUICIDE AT LYTTELTON.
A shocking occurrence took place on Tuesday liighh, in SaU's Chilly. A man named Kelson Bell- (a labourer), and well known in tho town, was discovered dead in his own I house, his throat being cut in a most horrible -manner. Various reports were circulated, but •we gal her from the best authority that there • can be no doubt tho unfortunate man com- • >mittcd tho deed himself. It appears that tho deceased lisul been ill during the day, and a ' neighbour numod Brown went to the house ' about 10 p.m. to see if ho required anything ; -on opening the door he found the house in darkness, but having a lantern, he saw on the : floor a large quantity of blood, and on further examination, ho 6aw deceased lying on a couch ' noar tho window, his head cut half off, and on the floor near his hand, was a large' knife, covered with blood. . He instantly gave an . alarm, and both Sergeant- Major Bar3ham and Constable O'Shannassey proceeded to tho ■ house and took possession of the body. It appears the deceased has been ill for some : time paat, and latterly he has taken to drinking heavily. The body was removed, this morning to tho casual ward, where cjwst mortem examination will take place, and an. inquest will bo held to-morrow.
