The contest between Messrs Hamilton and Sullivan, for the representation of the Southern Province in the Legislative Council, is jlikely to be severe. .Mr Austin, of Barwon Park, and the Hon. Tyerman, formerly of Christchurch, is still agitating the question of spiritism. He is much ridiculed and lampooned by tbe papers. The Stonehouse, with 440 immigrants, has arrived ; also the Anmi from Riverton, and Rangitoto from Hokitika. Sailed — Maid of Erin, for the Buller ; Aborigne, for Hokitika. The Matilda, schooner, brings the crew of the brigantine Active, wrecked hi Torres Straits. Flour is quoted at £12 to £12 15s, and Adelaide wheat at os lOd. New Zealand oats were sold at auction at 3s 3id. Sugars are firm. The Annie Brown and William Condell were loading at Mauritius for Port Chalmers and Lyttelton. Tookeys, which were at £39 to £40, fell on receipt of the Hero's news to — sellers, £26 to £27 ; buyers, £20 ; no business. Sydney, Dec. 19. The submarine cable from Java 'to Port Darwin is working effectually. News was brought to Normantown, Carpentaria, by one of the Northern Territory ! party, that 20 seamen of an American man-of- j at St. Mary's, stormed a female reforma- j tory. The captain and officers followed, and prevented the outrage intended. They arrested and ironed the offenders, and will probably make examples. Gulgong is favourably reported on as a goldfield. j A despatch from Lord Kimberley refuses to sanction the proposed annexation of Fiji to ' New South Wales. '; James Collins has been committed for trial, ! for the murder of his mate, Osborne, at the I Gulgong diggings. j A team of bullocks was killed by lightning at Bathurat. Arrived. — City of Adelaide and Galatea, and Hero from Auckland. Business is dull, pending tlie arrival of the mail. Breadstuffs are quiet. Adelaide, Dec. 19. It is rumoured that the Government will not take any person on the Northern Expedition who intends to prospect for gold. They fear that the development of the goldficlds would cause employes to leave their service and take to gold digging. There is a perfect plague of locusts. Wheat is firm at 4s lOd. Newcastle, Dec. 19. Arrived. — Havershain and Camille from Wellington ; Alarm from Auckland ; Southern Cross from Lyttelton.
