THE VOLUNTEERS.

The second competition for the rifle given by Mr Rose for competition amongst the regimental and honorary members of the Christehurcli battery of artillery took place no Wednesday at the Heathcote range. The conditions were seven shots at 300, 400, and 500 yards, with, any position and regulation targets, and the prize to be won twice by the same competitor before becoming private property. At the first competition, Gunner Pox was the winner with 64 points, but yesterday Quartermaster-Sergt. Raven, who was second on the first occasion, proved the suc--cessful competitor. The scores were as follows : —

Quartermaster-Sergt. Raven, Sergt. Roberts, Gunner Fox, and Gunner Long are selected as the members of the battery who are to compete for the honour of representing the province at the forthcoming Colonial prize competition.

Two cups have been presented to No. 2 Company — one by Captain Thomson and the other by Lieut. Gulliver : the former to be competed for by members of the shooting team of i the ' company, company prize holders, and the latter by the other members. Ranges, 200, 300, and 400 yards ; five shots ; ; any position. The former cup was competed for yesterday morning, and was won by Private H. Da via,' the commissioned officers shooting as members of team, but not competitors. The following are the scores : — ■
