This Day. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Cattle Trespass.—The following informations were disposed of : —W. J. Walter, one cow, two heifers, and one calf, on the Ferry Road, fined ss; Thomas Murray, one cow Selwyn street, Addington, fined 5s ; John Tetley, one horse in Manchester street, fined ss; Andrew Maher, nine cows, St. Albans Road, fined 10s j Alfred Osborne, one horse tethered in Cambridge terrace, fined 10s j Phillip Ball, one horse tethered on the East town belt, fined 5s ; Daniel Howard, one horse on the South town belt, fined ss. . Unregistered Dogs. —George Green and Wm. Shaw were each fined 20s for having unregistered dogs above the. ago of three months in their following. Assaults. —Frank Burns was charged with having violently assaulted and beaten Robert Russell. Mr Joynt appeared for the complainant, who said that accused brought some horses to the White Swan Hotel stables, and complainant told him to take them awayj as the stables were full. Accused became violent, and struck complainant with a- pair of horse bunkers, and threw, a tumbler at him. He was then put out of the bar. Accused was quite sober at the time, and no provocation whatever had been given, except lnso far as telling him to take away his horses. There had been no previous quarrel. The barman at the hotel gave corroborative evidence. By accused : Complainant did not strike accused, but only tried to put him out when ho began to bo riotous in the bar.. Accused, in defence, said'that complainant struck him first, arid that he did not use the blinkers at all, because he.hadn't them in his hand. He had just put them down. He did not return complainant's blow until another man assisted complainant in assaulting him. The barman, re-called,.Baid he went to help complainant to put accused out, but did not strike accused until after accused had struck bim.; He did not .sec complainant; strike accused at all. Complainant, re-called, said accused had not before the day in question created a row in the house. His barman assisted complainant to' put accused out, but they did not punish him at all. As to accused's face being cut, he wont to the Zetland Arms, and fell over a horse on the following day, which was the cause of the cut. His Worship said there could be, no doubt that accused had created a disturbance, but as he had clearly got the worst of it, - and as he had been compelled to . come, all the way. from Southbridge to answer the summoris, the case would be dismissed.—Robert Brown Marshall was summoned for having violently assaulted his wife Ellen Marshall, but as complainant expressed a desire to withdraw the information, his Worship allowed such to be done. — Charles M'Gachie was summoned for having assaulted his wife, but as ho failed to appear, a summons was ordered to be issued for his arrest. . : \ Offending Cabmen.—Thomas MTCay was summoned for having permitted his licensed cab to stand for hire elsewhere than oh a public stand. Constable Thoreau proved, the 'case, and a fine of 10s was imposed. —Hans. CUvrfee, for a similar offence, also proved by Constable Thoreau, was fined in the same amount. Breach of the Stage Carriage Ordinance.—Wm. Crowe was summoned for having employed a vehicle as a stage carriage without being duly licensed for the. same. Walter Hartnell, driver of a licensed ■'stage carriage, proved to having Been accused taking up passengers on the Ferry Road, and iaiit he did not hold a, license for that purpose. Accused, in defence, said that the passengers whom he took up -formed part of a number who had engaged his trap for the-.day. He had been a driver many" 'years,'but had never charged fares or received r money .from .single individuals.
