Mr Norman informed the committee that Mr Wilkin had consented to take the chair. The dinner was fixed for Tuesday next, at 7 o'clock, and Mr Wylde stated that he had made arrangements as formerly stated with Mr Morton, so as to insure a good dinner. Stewards were then appointed. It was decided that the number of tickets should be limited to 150, as previously arranged ; early application will therefore be necessary. The committee expected that a good number of Mr Cox's Chris tchurch friends would like to attend. Fire Police. — An ordinary general meeting of members was held in the reading-room of the new Fire Brigade Hall, Lichfield street, at 7 o'clock last night, Mr W. K. Mitchell in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and correspondence was read from the City Council acknowledging receipt of a copy of the rules which had been approved, also thanking the force for their services during the past year, the value of which the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade had reported upon very highly. Several accounts were passed and ordered to be paid, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Davis, that the officers be requested to wait upon the various Insurance agents in the town to solicit subscriptions to the fund of the force. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. Canterbury Jockey Club. — A special general meeting of the club was held at Tattersall's, at 2 p.m., yesterday. That after hearing the statements of Lunn, Omm, and Prince, and reading a letter from Lunn to Omm, dated Monday last (in addition to the previous evidence taken, the former decision of the Jockey Club is corroborated, viz., that tile Clerk of the Scales was correct as to Sir Tatton's jockey being under weight on weighing after the race. 2. That the evidence leads to the conclusion that the Jockey Club must declare that all parties concerned in the transaction must bo severely cautioned as to their future conduct." Mr S. Walker seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Several accounts were passed and ordered to be paid. It was resolved that a general meeting should be held this day (Wednesday,) at 11 o'clock. LrTTEi/rox Volunteer Artillery. — The distribution- of the prizes subscribed for by the tradesmen of Lyttelton and won by the members of tliis corps on fche Prince of Wales' Birthday, took place in the Drillshed on Monday evening. The-. Battery was under the command of Sergeant W. Cummins, and after a short drill the men broke off. Sergeant Cummins said he was sorry to have to apologise for the absence of Captain Giraud, who was obliged to be in Christchurch, but he had asked Mr Carder to take his place, and he had consented to do so. Mr Carder said he had been asked by their Sergeant to present the prizes won ; he should have preferred seeing their Captain doing this, but as this was not possible, he had much pleasure in undertaking the duty. It was .a great compliment, and as such he felt it. He was very glad to see the tradespeople of Lyttelton had so liberally responded to the appeal made to them, and he was certain the Battery were gratef ul for their kindness ; he was an old volunteer, and ho

hoped soon to be amongst them as an enrolled member. The prizes having been distributed, three cheers were given for the tradesmen of Lyttelton, and the corps, headed by their band, marched round the town and was then dismissed. Races and Agricultural Show. — We omitted in previous issues to draw attention to a very gratifying fact, and one which speaks highly for large assemblages in this province : not a single prisoner was arrested for drunkenness or disorderly conduct, either at the Races or the Agricultural Show.
